Operational emissions drop 35 percent, beating 2025 target

Greenhouse gas emissions at the Banque de France fell 35 percent between 2019 and 2025, beating the 25 percent reduction target. Total annual emissions dropped to 25,450 tonnes of CO2 equivalent as operational energy consumption contracted 27 percent.

Emissions down across core activities

The central bank lowered its total annual greenhouse gas emissions from 39,412 tonnes of CO2 equivalent in 2019 to 25,450 tonnes in 2025, according to a supplement to its sustainability report.

Energy remained the largest contributor at 16,118 tonnes or 63 percent of the total, down from 25,056 tonnes in 2019.

Employee commuting accounted for 4,803 tonnes or 19 percent, while business travel generated 2,304 tonnes or 9 percent.

Waste produced 1,709 tonnes and direct fugitive emissions stood at 517 tonnes.

The measured perimeter covers the central bank alongside subsidiaries BDF Gestion and EuropaFi, while excluding overseas territory issuer IEDOM.

Reductions progressed steadily from 29 percent in 2023.

Fossil fuels down, renewables at 20 percent

Total energy consumption contracted 27 percent from 187,882 MWh in 2019 to 136,871 MWh in 2025.

Fossil fuel use decreased 40 percent to 55,585 MWh, reducing its share in total energy from 49 percent to 41 percent.

Fuel oil consumption dropped 74 percent to 2,004 MWh, while natural gas decreased 35 percent to 40,220 MWh.

Renewable sources reached a 20 percent share of total energy.

On operational biodiversity, the static terrestrial footprint equaled 89.1 MSA.km2 in 2024, or 85 percent of the area of Paris.

Tangible cuts, lingering blind spots

Tracking internal carbon and biodiversity metrics provides welcome institutional accountability.

Exceeding the emissions target proves operational decarbonization is feasible without compromising core mandates.

Yet data gaps in aquatic biodiversity show disclosure standards remain a work in progress.
