Italian households sell assets, firms acquire in Q1 2026
Italian households recorded net sales of financial assets and a decrease in liabilities in the first quarter of 2026. Conversely, non-financial corporations significantly increased both their financial assets and liabilities during the same period.
Households reallocate portfolios
In the first quarter of 2026, Italian households registered net sales of financial assets totaling €4.8 billion.
This was primarily driven by decreases in deposits (€5.8 billion) and sales of shares and other equity (€5.7 billion), which more than offset purchases of debt securities (€17.6 billion) and asset management products (€11.7 billion).
Concurrently, households' financial liabilities decreased by €9.2 billion, as a decline in other financial liabilities (€14.7 billion) outweighed increases in bank loans (€4.4 billion) and other loans (€1.1 billion).
These movements indicate a reallocation within household portfolios, with a net reduction in overall financial assets and liabilities.
Corporate investment momentum
Italian non-financial corporations acquired financial assets totaling €34 billion in the first quarter of 2026.
The primary drivers were significant increases in shares and other equity (€31.6 billion) and other financial assets (€10 billion), partially offset by a decrease in deposits (€11.7 billion).
On the liabilities side, firms' financial obligations rose by €17.1 billion.
This increase was attributed to net issuance of debt securities (€7.5 billion) and shares and other equity (€5.2 billion), alongside a growth in loans (€5.5 billion).
These movements reflect active capital market engagement and financing for corporate expansion.
Benchmark revision impacts analysis
The latest financial accounts incorporate a significant benchmark revision from October 2024, reflecting updated data sources and national accounts changes.
While enhancing accuracy, this revision complicates direct comparisons with prior periods, requiring users to exercise caution when analyzing long-term trends.
The Banca d'Italia provides methodological notes, but the ongoing impact on time series analysis remains a key consideration for analysts.
