Four economics fellowships offer €5,500 a month

Four Bank of Italy research fellowships in Rome offer €5,500 a month before tax for economists holding or completing a doctorate. Applications and at least two reference letters are due by noon CET on November 13, 2026.

Twelve months of policy research

The fellowships begin by November 2027 and last twelve months, renewable for up to twelve more.

Fellows develop their own projects with a tutor and contribute to policy analysis.

Candidates must apply through the Bank's portal, uploading a CV, representative paper, research statement and identity documentation as PDFs; research documents must be in English.

Referees must send signed letters directly to the Bank.

Selection comprises document review, online interviews in December 2026 and English-language seminars in Rome planned from early January 2027.

Eligible seminar participants receive travel reimbursement and accommodation allowances of €500, reduced to €250 for residents of the EU, Schengen countries or the United Kingdom.

Four directorates share the intake

One fellowship goes to each Directorate: Economic Outlook and Monetary Policy; International Relations and Economics; Financial Stability; and Structural Economic Analysis.

Research spans monetary transmission, international trade and finance, financial risks, productivity and fiscal policy.

Applicants need full English proficiency and a doctorate, or completion of all doctoral requirements except the thesis defence.

Eligibility covers Italian and other EU citizens, qualifying non-EU residents, refugees, beneficiaries of subsidiary protection and eligible EU citizens' family members.

A pathway, not a guarantee

Permanent employment requires a separate selection process from October 2028, starting at Consigliere grade in the managerial career track.

Fellows must produce work suitable for the Bank's Working Papers series and meet recruitment requirements, including good Italian.

The fellowship itself does not secure a permanent post.
