Financial literacy of Italian micro-firms reaches 74 percent

Banca d'Italia surveyed 5,000 micro-enterprises in 2025, finding an average financial literacy score of 74 percent. The result marks a two percent improvement since 2021, with higher scores linked to larger turnover and digital adoption.

Dividends clear, credit mechanics lag

Across 5,000 surveyed micro-enterprise owners, 45 percent demonstrated high financial knowledge, 40 percent intermediate, and 15 percent low.

Comprehension peaked on dividends and the risk-return relationship at roughly 80 percent, while understanding of equity capital and loan maturity costs lagged at 63 and 61 percent respectively.

Daily financial management shows clear separation of accounts for nearly 90 percent of respondents, alongside high reliance on debit cards (86 percent) and credit cards (62 percent).

Bank loans and overdraft facilities are used by 38 and 29 percent of micro-firms, with credit uptake concentrated among larger entities.

Cloud spreads while AI experiments begin

While cloud computing reaches 44 percent of micro-enterprises, advanced digital technologies remain nascent.

Only 5 percent currently deploy artificial intelligence and 6 percent use robotics, though 19 percent are experimenting with or planning AI adoption.

Exposure to climate disruption is prompting defenses: 39 percent of firms have implemented risk strategies, led by insurance coverage (28 percent) and safety investments (26 percent).

Female entrepreneurs show higher adoption rates for emerging technologies and climate mitigation.

Solid basics, slow digital uptake

Italian micro-firms show solid financial discipline, but gaps in loan mechanics leave them vulnerable.

A five percent AI adoption rate reveals that technological transformation remains largely aspirational.

Basic literacy alone will not drive growth without deeper balance sheet and digital capabilities.
