Hélène Rey to lead BIS Monetary and Economic Department
Hélène Rey has been appointed as Economic Adviser and Head of the Monetary and Economic Department at the Bank for International Settlements. Her five-year term will commence in September 2026, following the retirement of Hyun Song Shin.
Leadership transition at the BIS
The Board of Directors of the Bank for International Settlements (BIS) has announced the appointment of Hélène Rey as its new Economic Adviser and Head of the Monetary and Economic Department.
This five-year term appointment is effective 1 September 2026, succeeding Hyun Song Shin, who retires at the end of August after 12 years of service.
Ms. Rey will lead the economics work of the Bank and join its Executive Committee, guiding strategic research and analysis on policy issues relevant to central banks.
The Monetary and Economic Department plays a crucial role in supporting BIS committees and organizing key meetings for senior central bankers.
Distinguished academic and policy advisor
Hélène Rey, Lord Raj Bagri Professor of Economics at London Business School since 2016, brings extensive expertise to the BIS.
Her research focuses on trade and financial imbalances, financial crises, and the international monetary system.
She has also advised the International Monetary Fund and the Group of Seven on issues ranging from financial stability to global imbalances, underscoring her significant contributions to global economic policy.
A former President of the European Economic Association in 2025, she holds a PhD from the London School of Economics and degrees from Stanford University.
