Following the June decision to hold the federal funds rate target range at 3.50 to 3.75 percent, Jefferson warned that any failure of inflation to cool down soon could prompt the FOMC to reconsider its stance.
Artificial intelligence and the neutral rate
Beyond geopolitical factors, Jefferson examined the macroeconomic effects of artificial intelligence, which acts as both a supply and demand shock.
AI optimism has already boosted firm capital expenditure and consumer demand, while anticipated productivity gains could expand long-run potential output.
Jefferson noted that if productivity increases permanently, it could push up the long-run neutral rate of interest, known as r*.
However, potential AI-driven income inequality could increase precautionary savings, partially offsetting upward pressure on the neutral rate.
