Higher yen rates lift Japan major bank profits by 32.7 percent

Net income at Japan’s major financial groups rose 32.7 percent to ¥6.0 trillion in fiscal 2025 as rising yen interest rates widened lending spreads. Regional bank profits expanded 37.4 percent to ¥1.7 trillion, while shinkin bank net income dropped 16.9 percent.

Expanding margins power core revenue

Net interest income at major financial groups rose 15.2 percent to ¥7.88 trillion in fiscal 2025, while regional banks posted a 17.2 percent increase to ¥4.85 trillion.

Widening domestic loan spreads drove earnings as lending rates moved above 1.25 percent, outpacing funding costs.

Pre-provision net revenue excluding trust cancellations rose 20.5 percent to ¥8.25 trillion at major groups and 32.2 percent to ¥2.46 trillion at regional banks.

Net non-interest income also supported results, rising 9.7 percent at major groups on deposit and loan fees.

Non-performing loan ratios remained low, with normal borrower classifications exceeding 95 percent at major institutions.

Equity gains cushion bond market drag

Rising bond yields created headwinds across balance sheets.

Regional banks realized ¥1.14 trillion in domestic bond losses, while shinkin banks logged ¥424.8 billion in bond disposals.

However, ongoing unwinding of strategic shareholdings generated ¥1.54 trillion in equity gains at major groups and ¥1.12 trillion at regional banks.

Shinkin banks suffered a 16.9 percent profit contraction to ¥241.6 billion as administrative overhead grew.

Capital adequacy ratios remained well above regulatory minimums.

A structural lift with fragile cushions

Positive interest rates deliver a vital structural boost to core banking margins after decades of compressed yields.

However, relying on equity liquidation to mask severe domestic bond losses remains an unsustainable buffer.

Smaller regional lenders face acute margin pressure if deposit costs reprice faster than legacy assets.
