Services Producer Prices rise 3.1 percent in March
The Bank of Japan reported that the Services Producer Price Index (SPPI) for all items rose 3.1 percent year-on-year in March 2026. Excluding international transportation, the index increased by 2.8 percent.
Broad-based price acceleration
The overall Services Producer Price Index (SPPI) saw a yearly increase of 3.1 percent in March, accelerating from 2.7 percent in February.
On a monthly basis, the index rose 1.2 percent.
This acceleration was largely driven by transportation and postal activities, which contributed significantly to the monthly differences in yearly changes.
Ocean freight transportation, in particular, recorded a substantial yearly change of 42.1 percent.
Domestic air passenger transportation also saw a notable increase of 4.2 percent year-on-year.
Hotels experienced a significant yearly rise of 10.5 percent, contributing to the broader upward trend in service prices.
The index excluding international transportation also showed a robust yearly increase of 2.8 percent, with a monthly rise of 1.0 percent, indicating widespread price pressures across the services sector.
Sectoral price dynamics
The Services Producer Price Index showed varied dynamics across major groups.
Transportation and postal activities registered the highest yearly change at 4.5 percent in March, significantly influencing the overall index.
Other services, encompassing areas like hotels and waste disposal, also posted a robust increase of 3.4 percent.
In contrast, information and communications services experienced a more subdued rise of 2.3 percent, and finance and insurance services grew by 1.1 percent.
The data also indicated that services with both high and low labor cost ratios saw similar increases of 3.0 percent and 3.1 percent respectively, pointing to broad-based cost pressures.
International transportation continued to show a substantial yearly change of 34.9 percent, reflecting its volatile nature.
