South Korea net investment position falls to 64 billion dollars
South Korea's net international investment position dropped by $689.5 billion over the quarter to $64.0 billion at the end of Q2 2026. A sharp rise in domestic stock prices boosted foreign equity valuations and drove up overall foreign liabilities.
Foreign stock rally drives surge in liabilities
According to preliminary figures from the Bank of Korea, foreign investment in South Korea expanded by $891.2 billion during the second quarter of 2026 to reach $3,020.2 billion.
The sharp increase was primarily driven by portfolio investment liabilities, which surged by $859.3 billion to $2,332.2 billion as rising domestic equity prices boosted the total valuation of foreign holdings.
Foreign portfolio equity holdings alone jumped by $848.1 billion to $1,880.6 billion.
Meanwhile, South Korea's outbound investment grew at a more modest pace, rising $201.7 billion to $3,084.3 billion.
Outbound equity portfolio investments added $146.2 billion to reach $1,113.1 billion.
Debt assets and obligations expand
In contrast to the narrowing overall net investment position, net external assets in debt instruments rose by $2.3 billion over the quarter to $367.8 billion.
Total external debt instruments held as assets increased by $40.7 billion to $1,180.6 billion, with short-term assets adding $33.9 billion.
Total external debt rose by $38.4 billion to $812.8 billion, driven by a $23.5 billion gain in long-term debt and a $15.0 billion increase in short-term obligations.
Consequently, the short-term external debt ratio relative to reserve assets climbed 3.1 percentage points to 46.5 percent.
Paper losses mask underlying debt strength
The sharp drop in net investments looks alarming, but it stems mostly from soaring equity valuations for foreign holders.
Korea's underlying solvency remains intact as net debt assets actually grew over the quarter.
Still, rising short-term debt ratios demand continued vigilance from financial regulators.
