Retail brokerage deposits hit record 1.1 trillion rubles in Q2

Retail investors deposited a record 1.1 trillion rubles into Russian brokerage accounts in the second quarter of 2026. According to the Bank of Russia, total retail portfolio assets reached 13.6 trillion rubles as falling bank deposit rates spurred fresh inflows.

Bonds dominate as inflows offset equity declines

Net retail inflows of 1.1 trillion rubles in the second quarter of 2026 offset negative portfolio revaluations, lifting total retail brokerage assets to 13.6 trillion rubles.

Qualified investors accounted for 63 percent of new deposits, while holding 76 percent of total individual assets across more than one million certified accounts.

The number of clients holding over 10,000 rubles reached 5.9 million, averaging 2.3 million rubles per account.

Resident bonds remained the primary investment asset, climbing to 37 percent of aggregate portfolios as individuals bought 358 billion rubles in debt securities.

Conversely, the domestic equity share fell to a record low of 20 percent despite net retail equity purchases of 101 billion rubles.

Wealth concentration and regional divides widen

Market penetration reflects stark regional divergence across Russia.

Moscow and the surrounding region hold 51 percent of total retail assets and 26 percent of active client accounts, characterized by heavy allocations to fixed income.

In contrast, regions with lower economic activity represent under one percent of client wealth, where smaller investors lean toward equities in pursuit of higher yields.

Meanwhile, mutual fund units rose to 22 percent of total portfolios, alongside technical defaults across 29 issuers that impacted 21 billion rubles in retail holdings.

Capital depth masks retail vulnerability

Record inflows reflect a migration from declining bank deposits rather than genuine investor sophistication.

Heavy wealth concentration in Moscow contrasts sharply with poorer regions taking excessive equity risk.

With technical defaults rising across lower-rated issuers, mass retail portfolios face mounting credit vulnerabilities.
