Rate increases to 2.10 percent leave financial stance neutral
Danmarks Nationalbank raised its current account rate by a cumulative 50 basis points to 2.10 percent following ECB decisions, maintaining an unchanged rate spread of -40 basis points. Financial conditions remain broadly neutral as buoyant risk appetite offsets higher borrowing costs.
Following Frankfurt at a steady discount
Danmarks Nationalbank matched European Central Bank rate increases with two 25 basis point adjustments in June and September 2026, lifting the current account rate to 2.10 percent.
The policy spread to the euro area remained at -40 basis points.
To counter krone depreciation, the central bank intervened in currency markets, purchasing kr.
6.3 billion across June and August.
Despite higher borrowing costs, domestic credit expanded: household credit growth rose to 3.7 percent in July, the highest since 2009, while corporate bank lending grew 6.4 percent.
The financial conditions index registered a net easing, as tighter credit was offset by equity gains and lower mortgage option-adjusted spreads.
Pension outflows and currency swaps
Krone dynamics reflect institutional shifts and foreign capital flows.
Between February and July 2026, Danish pension and insurance firms purchased kr.
67 billion in foreign securities, while their dollar hedging ratio fell to 64.0 percent.
Foreign investors received kr.
39 billion in dividends in March and April, delaying spot sales by lending kroner through currency swaps.
Concurrently, global sovereign bond markets face growing vulnerability as leveraged hedge funds have absorbed 30 percent of net US debt issuance since 2022.
Neutral today, restrictive tomorrow
Danmarks Nationalbank relies too heavily on buoyant equity markets to justify its neutral stance.
Imminent mortgage refinancings will inevitably lift household interest expenses above 2024 peaks by late 2027.
Masking this delayed tightening behind temporary risk appetite leaves Danish borrowers exposed.
