Olaf Sleijpen appointed NGFS Chair from July 2026
Olaf Sleijpen, Governor of De Nederlandsche Bank, will become the new Chair of the Network for Greening the Financial System (NGFS) on 1 July 2026. He will serve a two-year term, succeeding Sabine Mauderer, and was unanimously approved by NGFS members.
Sleijpen's mandate: Integrating climate risks
Olaf Sleijpen, Governor of De Nederlandsche Bank, will become the new Chair of the Network for Greening the Financial System (NGFS) on 1 July 2026.
This two-year appointment was unanimously approved by NGFS members, following a recommendation from the Steering Committee.
Sleijpen underscored the increasing impact of environmental factors on financial stability.
He stated: "Climate and nature-related risks are increasingly affecting financial and monetary stability.
Our main challenge is to translate these risks into how we assess and manage risks to both the financial system and individual institutions.
" He highlighted the NGFS's global role in helping central banks and supervisory authorities integrate these risks within their mandates, expressing his intent to build on recent progress and bolster partnerships.
The NGFS comprises over 150 central banks and supervisory authorities, voluntarily contributing to climate and nature-related risk management in the financial system.
NGFS's expanding global reach
Olaf Sleijpen succeeds Sabine Mauderer, First Deputy Governor of the Deutsche Bundesbank, who led the NGFS through a period of significant expansion.
Under Mauderer's leadership, the NGFS evolved into a robust global network, making substantial progress in integrating climate, adaptation, and nature-related considerations into financial risk management.
This growth occurred during a time marked by geopolitical and economic turmoil, underscoring the network's increasing relevance.
As Governor of De Nederlandsche Bank, Sleijpen brings extensive experience, also serving as a member of the Governing Council of the European Central Bank (ECB), the European Systemic Risk Board (ESRB), and a Governor of the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
He has also been a Professor of European Economic Policy at the Maastricht School of Business and Economics since 2007.
Continuity in climate leadership
Olaf Sleijpen's appointment ensures continuity in the NGFS's crucial work, leveraging his deep central banking and academic expertise.
His emphasis on integrating climate risks into financial assessments aligns perfectly with the network's strategic direction.
This leadership choice reinforces the NGFS's role in guiding global financial institutions through evolving environmental challenges.
