Steven Maijoor will step down from De Nederlandsche Bank to become Chair of the IFRS Foundation Trustees, succeeding Erkki Liikanen. The IFRS Foundation Monitoring Board approved his appointment on August 11, 2026.

Steven Maijoor has been approved as the new Chair of the IFRS Foundation Trustees, succeeding Erkki Liikanen following his landmark tenure.
Maijoor, who has served as an IFRS Trustee since January 2023, will lead the oversight body in advancing globally accepted accounting and sustainability reporting standards.
To assume the role, he leaves his position on the Executive Board of De Nederlandsche Bank (DNB).
His extensive career in financial regulation includes serving as Chair of the European Securities and Markets Authority (ESMA), Managing Director at the Netherlands Authority for the Financial Markets (AFM), and Chair of the International Forum of Independent Audit Regulators (IFIAR).
International endorsement in Tokyo
Toshiyuki Miyoshi, Chair of the Monitoring Board and Japan's Vice Minister for International Affairs of the Financial Services Agency, welcomed the appointment on behalf of global regulators.
Miyoshi highlighted Maijoor's senior-level experience across international bodies, including the Financial Stability Board and the Basel Committee on Banking Supervision.
He emphasized that Maijoor's breadth of financial sector knowledge and international networking skills will be instrumental in driving high-quality reporting standards essential for capital markets worldwide.
The right profile at a critical junction
Maijoor brings strong technical authority to the IFRS at a pivotal moment for global sustainability standards.
Yet aligning divergent jurisdictions like the United States and Europe will severely test his regulatory diplomacy.
Without broad international adoption, the foundation's ambition for truly global reporting remains incomplete.
