Paterson, Tobin and Pritchard join FCA Board
HM Treasury has appointed Lea Paterson CBE and Matthew Tobin as non-executive directors of the Financial Conduct Authority, while Deputy Chief Executive Sarah Pritchard joins the board as an executive member. All three appointees take up their roles on 1 October 2026.
Crisis legal veteran and central banker take seats
The appointments bring specialized expertise across crisis resolution, central banking and organizational governance.
Lea Paterson CBE previously served as the Bank of England’s executive director for People and Culture and its first director of Independent Evaluation, following journalism roles at The Times and The Independent.
Matthew Tobin, a former Slaughter and May partner with over 20 years of legal experience, advised HM Treasury on major systemic interventions, including the nationalisation of Bradford & Bingley, the Asset Protection Scheme and the COVID Corporate Financing Facility.
He has also guided FTSE 100 and FTSE 250 boards on financing strategy and operational resilience.
Internal continuity and strategic delivery
Alongside the non-executive appointments, Deputy Chief Executive Sarah Pritchard joins the board as an executive member to support the execution of the regulator’s five-year strategy.
FCA Chair Ashley Alder emphasized that the new members will contribute directly to market oversight and consumer protection.
“Their experience and fresh perspectives will be invaluable as we continue to deliver our strategy for consumers, markets and the wider economy,” Alder stated.
All three appointees assume their duties on 1 October 2026.
Crisis credentials meet everyday supervision
Appointing seasoned crisis lawyers and former central bankers gives the board deep structural expertise.
However, adding high-profile names does not automatically cure regulatory inertia or balance growth mandates with consumer protection.
Their true impact will depend on whether governance upgrades lead to faster enforcement.
