Retail banks extend loan grace period for Tai Po fire victims

All 28 retail banks in Hong Kong have extended the loan repayment grace period for individuals affected by the Tai Po fire by six months to the end of May 2027, the HKMA and HKAB announced on September 28.

Six-month relief across 28 lenders

The Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) and The Hong Kong Association of Banks (HKAB) agreed with the banking industry to lengthen relief measures following the Tai Po fire.

All 28 retail banks in the territory will extend the repayment grace period covering both principal and interest on existing mortgages, personal loans, and credit card debts by an additional six months through May 31, 2027.

The measure provides affected borrowers with temporary financial flexibility while they finalize long-term housing arrangements.

Mortgagee banks will also assist Wang Fuk Court borrowers who sell property rights to the government by extending grace periods until replacement units are ready.

The extension builds on relief measures first introduced by the HKMA and HKAB in March 2026 to support the government's long-term housing plan.

Under the framework, lenders maintain case-by-case coordination with Wang Fuk Court mortgagors during property transfers to the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government.

The banking sector and regulators established dedicated communication channels to review individual hardship requests and facilitate transitions to alternative housing.

Targeted forbearance avoids broader fallout

The coordinated forbearance provides critical breathing room for displaced households without threatening bank balance sheets.

Confining the relief to 28 retail institutions and a clearly defined group of borrowers keeps credit risk tightly contained.

The approach demonstrates effective supervisory crisis management through targeted operational flexibility.
