Banking industry expands support for Tai Po fire victims
The Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) and The Hong Kong Association of Banks (HKAB) have introduced additional measures to assist residents affected by the Tai Po fire. These measures support long-term housing arrangements for Wang Fuk Court, building on previous emergency aid.
Continued assistance for long-term housing
The Hong Kong Monetary Authority and The Hong Kong Association of Banks held a meeting to explore further banking industry measures in support of the long-term housing arrangements for Wang Fuk Court (WFC) in Tai Po.
Today, additional measures were introduced to continue assisting the affected residents in an empathetic and flexible manner.
These new steps acknowledge that residents require time to understand various options and details under the long-term housing arrangements, enabling them to make informed choices and corresponding financial arrangements.
This builds on 11 emergency support measures launched last year, on November 28 and December 4, 2025.
These initial measures included a six-month pre-approved repayment grace period for various loans, designed to alleviate immediate financial pressure and provide time for managing legal matters, insurance claims, and rehousing arrangements related to affected residential mortgages.
The banking industry aims to ensure comprehensive support throughout the rehousing process.
Vigilance against fraud remains crucial
The HKMA and HKAB also took the opportunity to issue a strong reminder to the public regarding fraud prevention.
They urged individuals to remain vigilant at all times against fraudsters who might exploit the situation.
The public should always authenticate the identity of callers claiming to be from banks.
Crucially, personal and bank account information, passwords, or any other sensitive details must never be disclosed to suspicious individuals.
This warning underscores the importance of protecting financial data, especially during times when individuals may be vulnerable or seeking assistance.
The authorities emphasize that legitimate banking communications will not request such sensitive information over the phone or through unverified channels.
Proactive support, critical warning
The banking industry's sustained support for Tai Po fire victims is a commendable and necessary extension of aid.
Focusing on long-term housing arrangements addresses a critical recovery phase, moving beyond immediate relief efforts.
The accompanying fraud warning is equally vital, underscoring persistent threats to vulnerable individuals during times of crisis.
