Coin Collection Programme announces new service schedule for spring 2026
The Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) has announced the new service schedule for its two 'Coin Carts' under the Coin Collection Programme. The schedule covers the period from March 23 to May 31, 2026.
Over a decade of coin recirculation
Since its launch in October 2014, the Hong Kong Monetary Authority's Coin Collection Programme has facilitated a significant number of transactions, demonstrating its widespread public adoption.
Up to February 1, 2026, the two mobile 'Coin Carts' have processed 1,454,000 individual transactions.
This initiative has successfully collected a total of 1,106 million coins, representing a substantial face value of HK$1,787 million.
A core objective of the programme is to ensure the collected coins are efficiently re-circulated within the economy, effectively meeting the ongoing demand for coinage and contributing to the sustainability of the currency system.
This continuous process helps manage the supply of physical currency in Hong Kong.
Convenient collection, green operations
The two Coin Carts rotate through Hong Kong's 18 districts, providing weekly service from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Locations are selected for public convenience and to reduce environmental impact, prioritizing sites with external power to minimize generator use.
Each cart is equipped with two coin counting machines and operational staff, including an electrical wheelchair lift.
The service allows users to exchange coins for banknotes or add value to stored value facilities, such as Octopus Cards or e-wallets.
A Community Chest donation option is also available.
This coin collection service is offered free of charge to the public.
