New schedule for HKMA Coin Collection Programme
The Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) has announced an updated service schedule for its two 'Coin Carts' under the Coin Collection Programme. The new schedule will run from June 1 to August 16, 2026, facilitating coin re-circulation across Hong Kong.
Over a billion coins re-circulated
Since its launch in October 2014, the HKMA's Coin Collection Programme has processed 1,489,000 transactions through its two mobile Coin Carts up to April 30, 2026.
During this period, the programme successfully collected 1,129 million coins, amounting to a total face value of HK$1,828 million.
These collected coins are subsequently re-circulated into the market, effectively meeting public demand and ensuring a continuous supply of currency.
The programme's consistent operation highlights its role in maintaining the efficiency of Hong Kong's payment systems and supporting the broader economy by keeping coins in active use.
Convenience and environmental focus
The Coin Carts offer services across Hong Kong's 18 districts on a rotating basis, strategically selecting locations convenient for the public without disrupting traffic or pedestrian flow.
Preference is given to sites with suitable power supply, such as Leisure and Cultural Services Department mobile library service locations, to minimise the use of stand-by generators and enhance environmental friendliness.
Each cart operates from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., equipped with two coin counting machines and staff assistance.
Users can exchange coins for banknotes, add value to stored value facilities like Octopus Cards or e-wallets (AlipayHK, Octopus Wallet, Tap&Go, WeChat Pay), or donate to the Community Chest.
The service is free of charge, and an electrical wheelchair lift is available for accessibility.
A pragmatic public service
The Coin Collection Programme represents a practical and well-executed public service, addressing a common need for coin disposal and re-circulation.
Its consistent performance and environmental considerations underscore a thoughtful approach to financial infrastructure.
While not a major policy initiative, the programme's ongoing success highlights the HKMA's commitment to accessible and efficient payment systems for the community.
