The Hong Kong Monetary Authority has announced the new service schedule for its two coin collection carts, covering the period from August 17 to October 25, 2026. The free service rotates through the city's 18 districts to re-circulate coins.

The Hong Kong Monetary Authority announced the service schedule for its two mobile coin carts, operating from August 17 to October 25, 2026.
Since the programme's launch in October 2014 through June 2026, the carts have handled 1,509,000 transactions, collecting 1,142 million coins with a cumulative face value of HK$1,853 million.
The vehicles rotate across all 18 districts of Hong Kong, typically staying at each selected location for one week between the service hours of 10 a.m. and 7 p.m.
Equipped with dual counting machines and electrical wheelchair lifts, the service allows the public to exchange coins for banknotes or top up stored value facilities free of charge.
Eco-friendly routing and public access
Service locations are chosen to maintain traffic flow and utilize existing power supplies, such as mobile library sites, minimizing the need for onboard generators.
The HKMA selects sites using public and district feedback while coordinating with the Transport Department and police force.
Beyond coin exchanges, each cart features a Community Chest donation box to support local charitable efforts during the operational cycles.

The programme successfully addresses physical currency circulation without burdening public finances.
By leveraging municipal infrastructure like libraries, the initiative operates efficiently.
It remains a pragmatic solution for managing coin liquidity in a digitalizing economy.
