Coin carts collect 1.156 billion coins worth HK$1.88 billion
The Hong Kong Monetary Authority has released the service schedule for its Coin Collection Programme covering October 26, 2026 to January 3, 2027. Since 2014, the two mobile units have collected 1.156 billion coins with a total value of HK$1.879 billion.
Recycling currency across eighteen districts
The two mobile Coin Carts will operate in new locations across Hong Kong from October 26, 2026 through January 3, 2027.
Between October 2014 and August 31, 2026, the programme handled 1,530,000 transactions and collected 1,156 million coins worth HK$1,879 million for recirculation.
Operating across Hong Kong's 18 districts, each vehicle remains at a designated location for one week, running from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily.
The free service allows members of the public to exchange loose change for banknotes or transfer value directly onto stored value facilities.
Supported platforms include Octopus Cards and digital wallets such as AlipayHK, Octopus Wallet, Tap&Go, and WeChat Pay.
Logistics, power grid and charity
To minimize local disruption, the HKMA coordinates site selection with district councils, the Transport Department, and the Hong Kong Police Force.
The authority prioritizes venues with fixed power hookups, including Leisure and Cultural Services Department mobile library spots, to reduce reliance on internal generators and lower vehicle emissions.
Each Coin Cart is equipped with two automated counting machines, an electrical wheelchair lift for accessibility, and a Community Chest donation box.
