CMU links with SIX and launches equity post-trade services
Hong Kong's Central Moneymarkets Unit has established a direct linkage with Swiss exchange operator SIX and launched its first equity post-trade services on July 29, 2026. The partnership expands member access to Swiss and Spanish securities markets.
Connecting Hong Kong to European markets
The direct linkage between the Central Moneymarkets Unit (CMU) and SIX allows CMU members direct access to securities in Swiss and Spanish markets.
Operated by CMU OmniClear Limited on behalf of the Hong Kong Monetary Authority, the partnership also marks the first time equity post-trade services are offered through the platform.
HKMA Chief Executive Eddie Yue characterized the launch as a major step toward transforming CMU into a one-stop, multi-asset class post-trade infrastructure.
By the end of June 2026, assets under custody at CMU exceeded HK$5.5 trillion equivalent as the entity continues expanding its international reach.
A multi-asset gateway for global capital
Since its establishment in 2024, CMU OmniClear has spearheaded the commercialization and internationalization of Hong Kong's central securities depository.
The expanded network aims to solidify Hong Kong's role as a financial gateway between Mainland China and global capital markets.
By adding equity clearing and settlement to its existing fixed income capabilities, the infrastructure supports broader multi-asset portfolio management for international investors while strengthening local currency markets.
Infrastructure growth meets market reality
Integrating Swiss and Spanish access reduces operational friction for Asian investors seeking European exposure.
However, success ultimately depends on whether trading volumes justify expanding into equity clearing beyond traditional bond settlement.
For now, the link bolsters Hong Kong's standing as a cross-border financial bridge.
