US rates held at 3.75–4 percent as inflation remains elevated

US policy rates remain at 3.75–4 percent, and the Hong Kong Monetary Authority warns that the local interest rate outlook remains uncertain. It urges the public to manage rate risks when buying property, investing or borrowing.

Strong growth meets elevated inflation

The Federal Reserve's Federal Open Market Committee kept the federal funds target range unchanged at 3.75–4 percent.

The Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) said the decision matched market expectations.

The Fed's statement described economic activity as expanding at a strong pace and the labor market as stable, while inflation remained elevated.

The HKMA said this reflected the Committee's attention to the inflation outlook and its possible need for more time to observe incoming data.

Hong Kong's monetary and financial markets continued to operate in an orderly manner.

The HKMA warned that the persistent Hong Kong dollar–US dollar interest rate differential leaves scope for carry trades to gradually weaken the local currency.

Carry trades meet local liquidity

The HKMA said the Hong Kong dollar and interbank rates depend on several factors, including risk appetite for carry trades and local currency supply and demand.

Capital market activity and seasonal factors influence those liquidity conditions.

US rate adjustments remain uncertain and depend on inflation, labor market developments and other economic data.

They may affect Hong Kong's rate environment.

The authority urged the public to manage interest rate risks carefully in property purchases, investments and borrowing.

A hold leaves uncertainty

The unchanged US rate does not remove uncertainty over Hong Kong's interest rate environment.

The HKMA identifies both US economic data and local currency supply and demand as influences.

It will continue monitoring markets to maintain monetary and financial stability.
