HKMA Chief Yue stresses role of financial leaders for Hong Kong

Eddie Yue, Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Monetary Authority, underscored the critical role of developing agile financial leaders for Hong Kong. Speaking at the Financial Leaders Programme graduation, he highlighted their importance in navigating global uncertainties.

Nurturing leaders for uncertain times

The Financial Leaders Programme (FLP) is designed to help senior executives reflect on long-term growth issues for their firms, sectors, and the financial system.

Eddie Yue, Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Monetary Authority, recalled welcoming the cohort on 'Liberation Day' (April 2, 2025), a day marked by significant US tariff increases.

He stated, "I sounded caution about the potential shocks and volatilities in the global financial markets, which did happen in quite a messy way.

" Mr. Yue emphasized the need for future financial leaders to acquire skills to navigate global uncertainties and maintain Hong Kong's status as an international financial center.

The programme distinguishes itself by assembling accomplished leaders who share real-world experiences and practical wisdom, rather than following a conventional curriculum.

This approach aims to equip participants with stronger financial and geopolitical acumen.

A proven pipeline of talent

Since its inauguration in 2022, over 80 participants have graduated from the FLP, with a significant number achieving career advancements.

Many alumni have also taken leadership roles in industry associations and advisory committees of financial regulatory bodies, actively contributing to the community and promoting the industry.

Mr. Yue acknowledged the crucial support from CEOs who nominated their colleagues, viewing it as a meaningful co-investment in cultivating Hong Kong's future leadership pool.

He expressed hope that the FLP will continue to be a key avenue for nurturing senior financial leaders for Hong Kong in the years to come.

The cohort's fruitful trip to Riyadh last October was also highlighted.

Beyond the classroom

The Financial Leaders Programme's emphasis on real-world experience and strategic reflection is vital for Hong Kong's evolving financial landscape.

While traditional training has its place, fostering adaptable leaders capable of navigating geopolitical shifts is a more critical investment for the city.

This forward-looking approach positions Hong Kong to proactively address future challenges rather than merely reacting to them.
