Yue links digital infrastructure and taxonomy to green finance

Hong Kong Monetary Authority Chief Executive Eddie Yue outlined how data infrastructure and the updated sustainable finance taxonomy drive green transition efforts at the 2026 Green Fintech Symposium on September 11, 2026.

Data pipelines meet climate targets

The HKMA is combining next-generation data infrastructure with market-led innovation to direct capital into decarbonisation projects.

The Commercial Data Interchange (CDI) has already facilitated over 108,000 loan applications and reviews, unlocking nearly HK$90 billion in estimated credit for small and medium-sized enterprises.

“Achieving a net-zero and climate-resilient economy is not just about mobilising more capital; it is about deploying capital more intelligently,” Yue said.

While CDI was not originally designed exclusively for green finance, Yue noted that transparent data allows institutions to verify carbon performance and measure emissions across supply chains.

Standardised definitions to curb greenwashing

To complement digital data rails, the HKMA released the next phase of the Hong Kong Taxonomy for Sustainable Finance earlier this week.

The updated taxonomy establishes science-based classifications for green, transition, and adaptation activities, designed to prevent greenwashing.

Yue stressed that Hong Kong's role as a conduit to mainland China and wider Asian markets enables local green fintech solutions—such as automated verification tools and AI-driven climate risk models—to scale rapidly across the region.

Plumbing ready, mandatory disclosure needed

Repurposing SME lending rails for emissions tracking is a clever shortcut, but voluntary data remains patchy.

The expanded taxonomy establishes credible guardrails against greenwashing across Asian markets.

Scaled transition impact will ultimately hinge on mandatory corporate disclosures rather than fintech showcases.
