PBOC expands e-CNY network with 12 new banking operators

The People's Bank of China (PBOC) has added 12 new banking-type e-CNY operators to its digital currency system. This expansion aims to enhance the inclusiveness of e-CNY services and meet public demand.

Twelve banks join digital yuan network

The People's Bank of China (PBOC) has significantly expanded its digital yuan (e-CNY) operational network by integrating 12 new banking institutions.

These newly designated banking-type e-CNY operators include major national players such as China CITIC Bank, China Everbright Bank, Huaxia Bank, China Minsheng Bank, and China Guangfa Bank.

Additionally, several key regional banks, including Shanghai Pudong Development Bank, China Zheshang Bank, Bank of Ningbo, Bank of Jiangsu, Bank of Beijing, Bank of Nanjing, and Bank of Suzhou, have been connected to the central bank's e-CNY system.

This expansion directly implements decisions from the 15th Five-Year Plan, which prioritizes the steady development of the e-CNY.

The PBOC aims to enhance the inclusiveness of e-CNY services, ensuring they are safe, convenient, and efficient to meet public demand.

All newly-added institutions must complete business and technical preparations before launching their e-CNY operations.

Strategic expansion for digital currency

The PBOC's decision is rooted in the strategic directives of the 15th Five-Year Plan, which emphasizes the steady and inclusive evolution of the e-CNY.

By expanding the operator base, the central bank aims to significantly enhance the accessibility and utility of its digital currency, catering to a broader public demand for secure, convenient, and efficient digital payment options.

This move underscores a commitment to fostering a robust digital financial infrastructure.

Moving forward, the PBOC plans to continue the orderly expansion of e-CNY operators, strictly adhering to market principles and the rule of law.

This methodical approach is designed to unleash the initiative and creativity of market entities, thereby building an open and inclusive environment.

The ultimate goal is to ensure a level playing field for all participants, facilitating the healthy and widespread development of the e-CNY ecosystem across China.
