Roundtable releases vision for Australian A2A payments system

The Account-to-Account (A2A) Payments Roundtable has released its vision for Australia's A2A payments system. This vision provides a clear reference point for future development, incorporating extensive stakeholder feedback.

Blueprint for Australian A2A payments

The vision outlines a long-term direction for Australia's account-to-account (A2A) payments system, aiming to be trusted and meet the evolving needs of consumers, businesses, and government agencies.

It explicitly supports resilience, competition, innovation, and productivity within the Australian economy.

Central to this vision are five key outcomes for end-users: A2A payments must be safe, reliable, affordable, easy to use, and inclusive.

To consistently achieve these, the system must demonstrate six core characteristics: it needs to be secure and protected; highly available and resilient; feature and capability rich; accessible for providers; commercially viable; and appropriately standardised.

These characteristics are to be underpinned by clear, collaborative, and adaptable governance arrangements, ensuring the A2A system remains a trusted national asset operating in the public interest.

Stakeholder voices guide direction

The A2A payments vision was significantly shaped by extensive stakeholder engagement, including numerous workshops, bilateral discussions, and a comprehensive public consultation.

This consultation garnered submissions from a wide array of participants across the payments ecosystem, such as banks, payment service providers, fintechs, and government agencies.

Feedback consistently demonstrated strong support for the vision's overall direction, particularly endorsing a shared national vision, enhanced A2A capability, and the modernisation of Australia's payments infrastructure.

Stakeholders also expressed a keen interest in understanding the practical delivery mechanisms, including prioritisation, sequencing, and governance, which will be detailed in the forthcoming A2A payments roadmap.

Vision clear, roadmap critical

This vision provides a crucial strategic framework for modernising Australia's foundational payment systems, addressing rapid technological changes and evolving user expectations.

While the outlined principles are sound and widely supported, its true impact hinges entirely on the detailed and timely execution defined in the upcoming roadmap.

Without concrete implementation plans and robust governance, this ambitious vision risks remaining largely aspirational rather than transformative for the national economy.
