Reserve Bank of Australia reports technology outage affecting payment settlements

The Reserve Bank of Australia experienced a system issue on January 27, 2026, which affected some of its payment settlement services. The outage delayed certain payments and approximately 500 property transactions.

RBA services disrupted by system issue

On the morning of January 27, 2026, at approximately 10:30 am, the Reserve Bank of Australia encountered a system issue that impacted several of its payment settlement services.

This disruption specifically prevented the processing of some file-based payments.

While the Fast Settlement Service remained unaffected, a subsequent issue further delayed around 500 PEXA property settlements, which were not completed before the extended settlement day ended at 10:45 pm.

The cause of the outage was swiftly identified, and RBA services were progressively restored, with file exchange capabilities becoming available from around 5:20 pm on the same day.

Recovery efforts and customer guidance

The Reserve Bank of Australia has actively collaborated with industry participants, maintaining regular contact to support recovery and resolution.

Following the restoration of RBA services on Tuesday, financial institutions resumed exchanging payment files and progressively processed delayed payments.

The RBA apologizes for the disruption caused, acknowledging the impact on financial institutions and their customers.

With no further system issues since late Tuesday evening, customers experiencing transaction difficulties or payment delays should contact their own financial institution directly.
