Monisha Chakraborty named RBI Executive Director

The Reserve Bank of India has appointed Monisha Chakraborty as Executive Director with effect from August 3, 2026. She will oversee the Foreign Exchange Department and the Financial Markets Regulation Department.

New helm for foreign exchange and markets

Monisha Chakraborty takes over as Executive Director at the Reserve Bank of India on August 3, 2026.

In her new role, she assumes direct responsibility for two critical divisions: the Foreign Exchange Department and the Financial Markets Regulation Department.

Before her elevation to Executive Director, she served as Chief General Manager-in-Charge in the Department of Supervision.

Her appointment brings a seasoned hand to market oversight and currency administration, drawing on an extensive central banking career spanning more than three decades across key operational, supervisory, and accounting domains.

Three decades of institutional memory

Over her career spanning more than thirty years at the Reserve Bank of India, Chakraborty has worked across core functions including Supervision, Foreign Exchange, and Government and Bank Accounts.

She previously served as Banking Ombudsman and participated in a technical committee tasked with reviewing the format of the central bank's Balance Sheet and Profit and Loss account.

Academically, she holds a Bachelor's degree in Economics and a Master's degree in Business Economics from Delhi University.

Continuity over disruption

Promoted internally after decades of service, Chakraborty represents institutional continuity over policy disruption.

Placing a supervision veteran in charge of market regulation signals a cautious, risk-averse posture.

While her technical credentials are solid, this routine elevation is unlikely to trigger bold regulatory reform.
