Banks gain pricing flexibility for Rupee bulk deposits in October
The Reserve Bank of India has issued final amendment directions granting regulated entities greater pricing flexibility for Rupee bulk deposits. The new guidelines cover six banking categories and take effect on October 1, 2026, following a public consultation process.
Tailored flexibility for bulk deposits
The Reserve Bank of India finalized updated interest rate directions following a draft consultation released on June 5, 2026.
The new framework grants financial institutions greater operational freedom in pricing large Rupee bulk deposits while imposing uniform disclosure standards across the sector.
Following feedback submitted by lenders and public stakeholders before the June 20 deadline, the central bank modified the draft rules to address market concerns.
The final directions apply comprehensively across commercial banks, small finance banks, regional rural banks, payment banks, local area banks, and urban co-operative banks to ensure consistency across all deposit-taking institutions.
October implementation deadline
All six amended deposit directions will officially take effect on October 1, 2026, giving regulated entities a two-month transition window to align their internal IT systems, treasury operations, and public disclosure mechanisms.
The central bank published a detailed summary of the feedback received alongside the final directions.
By standardizing disclosure rules while easing bulk pricing constraints, the regulator intends to foster healthy competition for wholesale deposits.
Flexibility with strict boundaries
The RBI's updated guidelines offer much-needed pricing agility for banks competing for wholesale liquidity.
However, the true test lies in whether institutions will maintain disciplined pricing without squeezing net interest margins.
Transparency is improved, but administrative complexity for smaller co-operative lenders will inevitably rise.
