Forex inflows exceed $20 billion under RBI swap facility

The Reserve Bank of India announced that its swap facility for FCNR(B) deposits, OFCBs, and ECBs has attracted over $20 billion in forex inflows. The facility, operational since June 8, 2026, mobilized $20,718 million by July 17, 2026.

Deposits lead the surge

The Reserve Bank of India's swap facility has successfully mobilized a total of $20,718 million in foreign exchange inflows by July 17, 2026.

FCNR(B) deposits accounted for the largest share, bringing in $17,406 million.

Overseas Foreign Currency Borrowings (OFCBs) contributed $1,970 million, while External Commercial Borrowings (ECBs) added $1,342 million.

These significant inflows, reported by Authorised Dealer Banks, underscore the immediate impact of the facility.

The initiative, operationalized on June 8, 2026, aims to strengthen the nation's balance of payments and incentivize crucial capital inflows, a key objective outlined by the RBI on June 5, 2026, to support economic stability.

Incentivizing capital inflows

The swap facility was introduced by the RBI on June 5, 2026, and became operational three days later on June 8, 2026.

It offers concessional swaps for fresh FCNR(B) deposits, OFCBs, and ECBs.

The facility for FCNR(B) deposits is available until September 30, 2026, while for OFCBs and ECBs, it extends until December 31, 2026.

This staggered expiry reflects the different liquidity dynamics and market conditions associated with each type of borrowing, providing targeted support for capital mobilization efforts.

Timely boost, but temporary

The rapid mobilization of over $20 billion underscores the effectiveness of the swap facility in attracting foreign currency.

While significant, the short-term nature of the facility suggests it serves as a tactical intervention rather than a long-term structural solution.

Its impact on the balance of payments will depend on sustained capital flows beyond the facility's expiry.
