Invalid banknote redemption fee rises to SEK 300

Sveriges Riksbank has raised the administrative fee for redeeming invalid banknotes from SEK 200 to SEK 300 per application, effective September 1, 2026. The central bank stated that the price increase is intended to cover administrative processing costs.

A fifty percent administrative adjustment

Starting September 1, 2026, applications submitted to redeem invalid Swedish banknotes incur a processing fee of SEK 300 per case, up from the previous rate of SEK 200. Sveriges Riksbank explained that the fifty percent fee adjustment reflects the actual operational expenses involved in evaluating and managing legacy currency submissions.

The updated charge applies to all submissions mailed or delivered after the September 1 cutoff date.

Individuals holding invalid currency can still submit claims through the formal redemption channel, but the higher administrative deduction will automatically be applied to each individual settlement case.

Advance warning before the price hike

The change follows an advance notice issued by the central bank on June 10, 2026, which urged holders of unredeemed notes to submit applications prior to the September deadline.

The Riksbank manages the verification of withdrawn or damaged banknotes through dedicated application procedures.

By aligning user charges with the real handling workload, the central bank aims to ensure that routine administrative procedures for expired cash do not generate an operational deficit.

Sensible housekeeping, negligible impact

The fee adjustment represents sensible housekeeping that appropriately shifts processing costs to legacy cash holders.

For retail banking and broader monetary policy, the operational change is entirely negligible.

It simply ensures that the administrative burden of handling obsolete physical currency does not fall on the public purse.
