Göran Hjelm appointed new Deputy Governor of the Riksbank
The Riksbank's General Council has appointed Göran Hjelm as a new Deputy Governor, effective March 2, 2026. He succeeds Anna Breman and will join the Executive Board.
A New Voice for Monetary Policy
Göran Hjelm has been appointed as a new Deputy Governor and member of the Riksbank's Executive Board for a six-year term, commencing March 2, 2026. The General Council's decision was unanimous.
Mr. Hjelm brings a strong academic background, holding a PhD in Economics from Lund University.
His professional experience includes serving as Administrative Director and Head of the Fiscal Policy Council.
Previously, he held key positions at the National Institute of Economic Research, where he led research and managed departments focused on public finances, price-setting, and the labour market.
He also contributed as Inquiry Secretary on the Riksbank Committee, providing him with relevant insights into central bank operations.
Strengthening the Executive Board
Göran Hjelm succeeds Anna Breman, who left the Riksbank at the end of last year.
Bo Broman, Chair of the General Council, and Tomas Eneroth, Vice Chair, praised Mr. Hjelm's "high academic competence and solid experience of the macroeconomic fields relevant to the Riksbank.
" They noted his expertise in economic analysis and labour market issues will "be a good complement to the other members of the Executive Board.
" The Riksbank's Executive Board has five members, serving five or six-year terms.
Governor Erik Thedéen, First Deputy Governor Aino Bunge, and Deputy Governors Per Jansson and Anna Seim are the other current members.

Göran Hjelm's appointment brings a valuable blend of academic rigor and practical policy experience to the Riksbank's Executive Board.
