Policy rate held at 1.75 percent as inflation risks linger
The Riksbank has held its policy rate unchanged at 1.75 percent, effective 26 August 2026. The Executive Board noted that while summer inflation and growth exceeded June forecasts, subdued pricing plans and weaker labor market data justified holding borrowing costs steady.
Steady borrowing costs against summer price pressure
The Executive Board decided to keep the policy rate at 1.75 percent, applying from 26 August 2026.
During the summer, Swedish economic growth and inflation both exceeded the central bank's June projections.
Underlying inflation excluding energy and direct effects from temporary fiscal measures remained close to the 2.0 percent target, while measured headline inflation stayed low due to fiscal relief.
Although GDP growth accelerated and economic sentiment improved, the labor market developed more weakly than anticipated with elevated unemployment.
The Riksbank maintained that the probability of a rate increase later this year remains on the table if summer inflation signals a persistent upturn.
Supply disruptions ease despite geopolitical conflict
Uncertainty regarding the ongoing conflict in the Middle East between the United States and Iran remains high, maintaining the risk of supply-driven price pressures.
However, the economic fallout has proven smaller than initially feared.
Oil and commodity prices have declined from spring highs, and corporate pricing plans have moderated alongside easing global supply chain frictions.
The Riksbank cautioned that without a peace agreement, geopolitical risks continue to warrant strict vigilance.
Hesitation disguised as vigilance
Holding rates steady while signaling future hikes highlights the Riksbank's dilemma between weak jobs and external supply risks.
Threatening tighter policy manages inflation expectations without overburdening fragile domestic employment.
This wait-and-see stance merely postpones the inevitable choice until autumn data arrives.
