Swedish firms note hesitant recovery amid global uncertainty

Large Swedish companies report a slow and hesitant improvement in economic activity, according to the Riksbank's Business Survey conducted in February. This cautious outlook is primarily driven by the uncertain global environment.

Households show cautious willingness to spend

Large Swedish companies report a slow and hesitant improvement in economic activity, according to the Riksbank's Business Survey conducted in February.

Companies selling goods and services to households describe a somewhat brighter situation compared to last autumn, with strengthened consumer willingness to spend reflected in increasing sales volumes.

However, households are perceived to remain price-conscious and selective, and businesses see a risk that global events may cause households to tighten their purse strings again.

The manufacturing sector presents a divided picture, with strong demand in areas like defence, contrasting with struggles in forestry, steel, and automotive industries.

The appreciation of the krona negatively impacts export earnings, but exchange rate fluctuations are perceived as the primary challenge.

Pricing strategies and AI's evolving role

Non-durable goods retailers plan to reduce their selling prices due to a temporary VAT cut on food.

Other retailers and service companies plan to increase selling prices in line with inflation, noting that household price consciousness dampens pricing plans.

The survey also indicates that almost all companies use AI in their operations, primarily to increase productivity with existing staff rather than reducing headcount.

Companies anticipate long-term changes in the labour market, with evolving skill demands, but the immediate effects of AI on their business are currently limited.

A fragile recovery, not a robust rebound

The Riksbank's survey paints a picture of a tentative recovery, far from the robust rebound needed to alleviate broader economic concerns.

While some sectors show glimmers of improvement, the pervasive caution among households and businesses, coupled with global uncertainties, suggests underlying fragility.

This hesitant sentiment indicates that significant economic momentum remains elusive for Sweden's economy.
