Ulrich Bindseil named director of Gerzensee Study Center

Ulrich Bindseil will become director of the SNB's Study Center Gerzensee on January 1, 2027. He succeeds Martin Brown, who assumes leadership of the Swiss National Bank's Economics Department on October 1, 2026.

ECB veteran takes the helm

Prof. Dr. Ulrich Bindseil has been appointed director of the Study Center Gerzensee, a foundation of the Swiss National Bank (SNB), effective January 1, 2027.

He takes over from Prof. Dr. Martin Brown, who has led the center for nearly five years.

Bindseil joins from the European Central Bank (ECB), where he held senior executive roles overseeing monetary policy, market infrastructure, and payments.

An honorary professor of macroeconomics at the Technical University of Berlin, Bindseil is a widely published central banking expert.

Meanwhile, Martin Brown will assume leadership of the Economic Affairs department at the SNB starting October 1, 2026, after successfully expanding the center's research and education network.

Internal rotation strengthens research ties

Under Martin Brown's leadership, the Study Center Gerzensee strengthened its international presence and developed its role as an educational facility, research institute, and meeting venue for central bankers and academics.

Both the SNB Governing Board and the Foundation Council commended Brown for his contributions to preparing the institution for future challenges.

The transition bridges high-level academic research with operational central bank policy, as Brown brings academic rigor directly into the SNB's central economic analysis division.

Strategic depth over routine shuffle

Attracting an ECB veteran of Bindseil's caliber is a notable coup for the Gerzensee foundation.

Moving Brown to head the SNB's Economic Affairs department addresses internal leadership needs with proven expertise.

This coordinated personnel shift reinforces the analytical bridges between central banking and academia.
