Regional economies rebound as Mexican GDP expands 1.42 percent

Economic activity expanded across all four regions of Mexico during the second quarter of 2026, driving national GDP growth of 1.42 percent following a contraction in the previous quarter. Headline inflation eased to 3.92 percent as supply shocks subsided.

Growth returns across four zones

National gross domestic product expanded 1.42 percent quarter-on-quarter in the second quarter of 2026, reversing the 0.34 percent contraction recorded in the previous period.

The recovery was broad-based across major sectors, led by primary activities with 2.44 percent growth, secondary activities with 1.64 percent, and tertiary services with 1.36 percent.

Regional output grew across all territories: the North expanded 1.5 percent, the North-Central region 1.6 percent, the Central region 1.4 percent, and the South 1.2 percent.

Concurrently, annual headline inflation fell from 4.13 percent in the first quarter to 3.92 percent in the second quarter, reaching 3.26 percent in August.

Trade friction and local hurdles

Despite the quarterly rebound, economic slack persisted due to prolonged underlying weakness.

External uncertainty intensified following the United States decision to trigger annual USMCA review mechanisms alongside metal tariffs.

Domestically, business contacts cited persistent public insecurity, logistics bottlenecks, and water and electricity constraints as core operational headwinds.

Meanwhile, the 2026 FIFA World Cup provided an estimated 0.017 percentage point boost to national GDP without generating noticeable price pressures in host cities.

Fragile recovery masks structural cracks

The quarterly rebound provides welcome relief but fails to eliminate persistent economic slack.

Escalating USMCA trade friction and chronic security deficits continue to cloud the regional investment outlook.

Without targeted infrastructure upgrades and institutional reforms, long-term regional potential will remain constrained.
