Corporate credit costs rise 15 basis points to 3.79 percent

The ECB reported that euro area corporate borrowing costs rose 15 basis points to 3.79 percent in June 2026. Mortgage rates for households remained broadly unchanged at 3.51 percent, while time deposit rates for both firms and households increased.

Higher borrowing costs for business loans

Corporate lending costs indicator rose by 15 basis points to 3.79 percent in June 2026.

Rates on new corporate loans over 1 million euros with floating rates or initial rate fixation up to three months saw the largest increase, jumping 26 basis points to 3.54 percent.

Loans of the same size with rate fixation over ten years rose 16 basis points to 3.77 percent, while smaller loans up to 250,000 euros increased by 13 basis points to 3.91 percent.

Meanwhile, corporate deposit rates also edged higher across maturities.

New corporate time deposits up to one year rose 16 basis points to 2.19 percent, and overnight deposits ticked up 6 basis points to 0.59 percent.

Mortgage rates hold steady while deposits gain

Borrowing costs for household mortgages remained virtually flat in June 2026, edging up just 3 basis points to an aggregate indicator of 3.51 percent.

Variable-rate mortgages rose 5 basis points to 3.65 percent, whereas consumer credit interest dropped 12 basis points to 7.50 percent.

On the liability side, banks passed higher yields to savers: household time deposit rates climbed 13 basis points to 2.09 percent, driven by a 11-basis-point increase in short-term deposits up to one year to 2.03 percent.

Uneven pass-through across credit sectors

The sharp rise in corporate loan rates shows banks passing tighter funding conditions directly onto business borrowers.

In contrast, sticky household mortgage rates indicate muted credit demand and cautious consumer lending strategies.

For monetary policy, this confirms corporate finance absorbs rate pressures faster than retail housing.
