Children design future euro banknotes

The Banco de España invites children aged 6 to 12 to design future euro banknotes. Submissions for the 'Imagine Your Banknotes' competition are open until June 19, 2026.

Imagining Europe's future currency

The 'Imagina tus billetes' initiative, launched by the Banco de España, invites children aged 6 to 12 to submit their creative design proposals for the next series of euro banknotes.

Participants are required to use an official template, downloadable from the Banco de España's website.

Designs must draw inspiration from one of two themes pre-selected by the Eurosystem: 'European culture' or 'rivers and birds of Europe'.

These themes aim to reflect the shared identity and natural heritage of the continent.

Five prizes, including institutional gifts and a guided tour of the Banco de España's Madrid headquarters, will be awarded through a draw from proposals received by June 19, 2026.

A virtual exhibition of selected drawings will later be hosted on the Banco de España's website.

Eurosystem's design journey

This initiative by the Banco de España is part of the wider Eurosystem process for designing the next series of euro banknotes.

In 2024, the European Central Bank (ECB) announced the two pre-selected themes, 'European culture' and 'rivers and birds'.

In 2025, the ECB launched a design competition for professional designers across Europe.

This year, the ECB will announce the finalist proposals and conduct an online survey to gather public opinion.

By year-end, the ECB's Governing Council is expected to decide the winning proposal.

The issuance date for the new banknotes will be determined after the design is chosen.
