BI-COMP processes €542.0 billion in first nine months of 2026

BI-COMP handled €542.0 billion in payments in January–September 2026, according to Bank of Italy statistics published on October 27, 2026. Bancomat transactions accounted for €68.1 billion.

Bancomat leads transaction volumes

BI-COMP recorded 1,635,732 thousand operations through September 30, 2026.

Bancomat ATM withdrawals and card payments accounted for 1,505,940 thousand operations, cheque truncation for 25,116 thousand and collection orders for 104,675 thousand.

Their respective values were €68.1 billion, €126.3 billion and €347.7 billion.

The reported total was €542.0 billion.

In 2025, the system recorded 2,149,890 thousand operations worth €737.3 billion: €93.2 billion in Bancomat transactions, €196.2 billion in cheque truncation and €447.9 billion in collection orders.

Annual totals were 2,437,669 thousand operations and €1,122.9 billion in 2024, versus 3,187,989 thousand operations and €2,441.5 billion in 2023.

Clearing payments and holding securities

The Bank of Italy manages BI-COMP to exchange and multilaterally clear retail payments before settling intermediaries' net balances.

The report describes streamlining that includes phasing out SEPA components.

It also covers Monte Titoli S.p.A., known as Euronext Securities Milan, Italy's central securities depository.

Its custody statistics measure outstanding nominal values, covering shares, bank and non-bank bonds, government securities and securities held through links with foreign central securities depositories.

Comparability has clear limits

The 2026 figures cover nine months, not a full year.

BI-COMP's SEPA component phase-out also changes the scope behind historical totals.

These coverage differences limit what the aggregate series alone establishes about changes in Italian payment activity.
