G7 cyber experts meet in Palermo on resilience

The G7 Cyber Expert Group (CEG) held a meeting in Palermo from June 9 to 11, hosted by Banca d'Italia. Participants discussed international cooperation on cybersecurity and operational resilience in the financial sector.

Strengthening the global cyber shield

The G7 Cyber Expert Group (CEG) held a crucial meeting in Palermo, Sicily, from June 9 to 11, hosted by Banca d'Italia.

The central agenda focused on advancing international cooperation for cybersecurity and operational resilience within the financial sector.

Stefano Siviero, Head of the Directorate General for Payments and Market Infrastructures at Banca d'Italia, stressed the paramount importance of effective international collaboration.

He highlighted the necessity of addressing a complex geopolitical environment and an ever-evolving threat landscape.

Siviero underscored that the security of the financial system increasingly relies on strengthening the entire global financial ecosystem, beyond just individual institutions, through coordinated management of operational interdependencies, emerging risks, and new vulnerabilities.

Participants thoroughly discussed lessons learned from a recent exercise designed to test coordination among G7 authorities in response to a global cyberattack scenario.

Furthermore, particular attention was given to the cybersecurity implications linked to the growing adoption of emerging technologies, specifically artificial intelligence and quantum computing.

Regional support, global mandate

Banca d'Italia hosted the CEG meeting at its branch in Palermo, Sicily, a decision that highlighted the importance of its regional network.

This network is crucial for representing and supporting the Bank in its institutional functions.

Milena Caldarella, the Branch Director, welcomed participants and outlined the main functions performed by the Bank's branches, emphasizing their role as a key point of contact between the Bank, citizens, and the local economy.

The G7 Cyber Expert Group (CEG), established in 2015, operates as a standing working group for the financial authorities of the G7 and the European Union.

Its mandate is to promote international cooperation on cybersecurity and operational resilience in the financial sector through information-sharing, joint threat analysis, and the development of common approaches to risk mitigation.

Beyond the traditional perimeter

This meeting underscores the persistent and growing threat landscape facing the financial sector, demanding continuous adaptation and proactive strategies.

The explicit focus on artificial intelligence and quantum computing highlights a crucial forward-looking risk assessment, anticipating future vulnerabilities beyond traditional cyber threats.

While international cooperation is vital, its effectiveness ultimately depends on consistent implementation of coordinated defenses across diverse national frameworks.
