Italy's general government debt fell to €3,200.848 billion in August 2026, according to Bank of Italy statistics published on October 15, 2026. The borrowing requirement reached €10.372 billion as Treasury cash balances declined.

Cash drawdown finances borrowing

Provisional figures put August debt at €3,200.848 billion, down from €3,206.996 billion in July.

The general government borrowing requirement was €10.372 billion, compared with a €16.065 billion surplus in July.

Treasury liquid balances fell €16.590 billion to €59.147 billion, while transactions in debt instruments reduced liabilities by €6.218 billion.

Debt net of Treasury liquid balances rose from €3,131.260 billion to €3,141.701 billion.

Medium- and long-term securities financing was negative by €17.811 billion; short-term securities financing added €3.652 billion.

Central government accounted for €10.142 billion of August's borrowing requirement, local government added €232 million and social security institutions recorded a €2 million surplus.

Annual debt figures revised upward

The release incorporates updates following the September 30 notification to the European Commission under the Excessive Deficit Procedure.

Relative to September 15 figures, reported debt revisions were €157 million for 2022, €296 million for 2023, €829 million for 2024 and €1,206 million for 2025.

Revised 2025 debt stood at €3,097.093 billion.

Debt-to-GDP ratios were 138.4, 134.0, 134.3 and 136.7 percent for 2022-2025 respectively, using Istat national accounts published on September 22, 2026.

The Bank attributes the small revisions to routine source updates.

Lower debt, less cash

August's gross debt decline coincided with higher debt net of Treasury cash, distinguishing liability reduction from changes in liquidity.

Debt maturing within one year rose to €586.762 billion from €568.825 billion in July.

Average residual maturity declined from 7.9 to 7.8 years.
