Sleijpen advocates for Ukraine's EU membership and European resilience

Olaf Sleijpen, President of De Nederlandsche Bank, reaffirmed the Netherlands' unwavering support for Ukraine in a speech in Kyiv. He emphasized the need for a stronger, more resilient Europe and advocated for Ukraine's eventual European Union membership.

Navigating Europe's new geopolitical reality

De Nederlandsche Bank President Olaf Sleijpen expressed profound solidarity with Ukraine, stating the Netherlands' firm commitment to support the nation against the Russian invasion.

He highlighted the rapid disappearance of the post-war international order, based on the rule of law and free trade, replaced by a world where major powers pursue their interests aggressively.

This new geopolitical reality, combined with the ongoing climate crisis, technological evolution (especially AI), and ageing populations in many European countries, necessitates a stronger, more resilient Europe.

DNB is actively strengthening its contingency planning for various scenarios, from power outages to military conflicts, acknowledging valuable lessons from Ukraine's experience in safeguarding financial stability under extreme circumstances.

Unlocking Ukraine's European future

Sleijpen asserted that Ukraine is an integral part of Europe, sharing geographical, historical, and value-based ties, and should therefore become a member of the European Union.

He outlined mutual benefits: Ukraine would bolster Europe's defenses with its military capabilities and experience, and its 45 million people would boost the single market.

For Ukraine, EU membership would drive economic growth and prosperity through adopting regulations, institutions, and liberalisation.

While acknowledging the economic transition will take time and raise questions for the EU on decision-making and budget, Sleijpen views these as challenges the Union must address regardless, seeing Ukrainian membership as a potential catalyst for positive internal EU change.

Beyond rhetoric, a strategic imperative

This speech transcends typical central bank discourse, offering a robust political vision for Europe's future.

Sleijpen effectively frames Ukraine's EU membership as a strategic imperative, not merely an act of solidarity, but a catalyst for necessary internal reforms within the Union.

The emphasis on long-term resilience and stability underscores a profound shift in European strategic thinking.
