Greek bank NPLs drop to 3.4 percent as RRF loans reach 13 billion

Clean balance sheets and record allocations
Greek banks have completed a major turnaround, with the average Capital Adequacy Ratio reaching 20 percent and the Liquidity Coverage Ratio standing at 190 percent as of March 2026.
The average non-performing loan ratio dropped to 3.4 percent, aligning closely with the European Union average, while lenders recorded double-digit returns on equity.
Ample liquidity and investment-grade status across significant banks have restored dividend payouts and credit intermediation.
This recovery is reinforced by the Recovery and Resilience Facility, where Greece secured the EU's highest allocation relative to GDP.
Contracted RRF loans reached 13.2 billion euros by May, driving disbursements to a 68.5 percent rate.
Smoothing the post-2026 investment cliff
The expiration of formal RRF milestones in 2026 does not mark an immediate funding precipice, as private sector loan disbursements will extend through 2029 alongside upcoming EU Multiannual Financial Framework resources.
However, geopolitical friction in the Middle East and renewed energy price volatility underscore broader macro risks for European monetary policy.
To finance defense, energy security, and digital transitions without relying solely on national budgets, European economies must accelerate the Savings and Investments Union and complete the Banking Union.
Beyond the bank balance sheet
Greece has repaired its banking sector, but bank lending alone cannot power long-term growth.
Deepening local capital markets and attracting venture capital are mandatory once European stimulus fades.
Without structural reform continuity, temporary public windfalls will fail to create lasting productive capacity.
