AI adoption reaches 86 percent among UK financial survey respondents

AI use reached 86 percent of respondents in the Bank of England and Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) survey published October 26, 2026, versus 75 percent in 2024. Third-party systems represented 53 percent of high-materiality deployments.

Wider deployment, limited autonomy

Generative AI accounted for 56 percent of reported systems; foundation models represented 17 percent in 2024, but the measures are not directly comparable.

Operations and IT held 31 percent of systems, versus 22 percent in 2024.

Firms classified 7 percent as highly material, down from 16 percent, although their absolute number increased.

Ten firms accounted for 43 percent of systems.

AI agents were deployed by 80 percent of full-survey respondents, with another 14 percent planning deployment within 12 months.

Only 2 percent reported broadly autonomous agents.

Third parties supplied 39 percent of systems, up from 33 percent in 2024; their share of high-materiality systems rose from 35 to 53 percent.

Efficiency, automation and productivity ranked highest among current benefits.

Concentrated suppliers, uneven controls

The top three cloud providers held 79 percent of reported relationships; the top three model providers held 54 percent.

Firmwide AI policies covered 94 percent of respondents, but only around half reported ongoing monitoring, leakage testing or periodic review.

Vendor assurance supported understanding of third-party systems at 81 percent of firms; 24 percent reported deep knowledge.

The survey covered 196 firms, with 105 completing the full questionnaire underpinning most figures.

Results do not represent the whole sector; changes in respondents and questions limit comparisons.

Cyber exposure outlasts deployment

Cyber amplification and critical third-party dependencies topped respondents' systemic risk concerns.

High or severe cyber concerns rose from 57 percent today to 80 percent looking one to three years ahead.

Only 35 percent of highly critical, hard-to-substitute cloud relationships had tested exit plans.
