Speransky silver coin enters circulation with 3,000-piece mintage

The Bank of Russia will issue a 2-ruble silver coin honoring Mikhail Speransky on November 3, 2026. The Russia's Jurisprudence series issue has a mintage of 3,000 coins and is legal tender at face value.

Silver portrait of a reformer

Catalogue No. 5110-0201 is a round, proof-quality coin with 15.55 g of fine silver, fineness of 925/1,000 and a diameter of 33.0 mm. Both faces have relief rims; the edge is corrugated.

The obverse carries Russia's national coat of arms, the inscriptions Russian Federation and Bank of Russia, the 2-ruble denomination and 2026 issue year.

It also shows the metal's chemical symbol from Mendeleev's periodic table, fineness, fine metal content and Saint Petersburg Mint trademark.

The reverse depicts Speransky's portrait, a book and an inkwell with a feather against a laser-matted image of the Pillar of the Law.

Relief inscriptions identify M. Speransky around the upper circumference, with 1772 and 1839 in two lines on the left.

From separation to codification

Mikhail Speransky (1772–1839) was a Russian reformer of the 19th century.

Under Alexander I, he proposed restructuring the highest levels of government through separation of the legislature, the Duma; the executive, the ministries; and the judiciary, the Senate.

Under Nicholas I, he led the codification of Russian law: 45 volumes of the Complete Collection of the Laws of the Russian Empire and 15 volumes of the Digest of the Laws.

Nicholas I rewarded him with his own Order of St Andrew the Apostle the First-Called, Russia's highest order.

Face value still governs

The Bank of Russia states that the coin is legal tender throughout the Russian Federation.

Acceptance is mandatory for all kinds of payments without restrictions at its 2-ruble face value.

The issue combines that payment status with proof production and a limited mintage of 3,000 coins.
