Key rate kept at 14.00 percent as price growth accelerates
The Bank of Russia maintained its key rate at 14.00 percent per annum, citing intensified inflationary pressures during June and July. The central bank projects annual inflation to reach 6.0 to 7.0 percent in 2026 before returning to its 4.0 percent target in 2027.
Underlying prices accelerate
The Bank of Russia kept its key interest rate unchanged at 14.00 percent per annum following its policy review.
The Board of Directors highlighted a considerable intensification of inflationary pressures across June and July, with underlying annualized price growth accelerating from 4–5 percent to 5–6 percent.
Economic expansion continued at a moderate pace, propelled by robust domestic demand.
Higher household incomes fueled consumer spending, while buyers front-loaded major purchases in anticipation of further price rises.
In addition, recovering investment activity and expansionary fiscal policy contributed substantially to overall demand growth.
Fuel markets and the path to target
Future inflation dynamics will depend substantially on fuel market conditions, which the central bank assumes will normalize gradually under its baseline scenario.
Tight monetary policy is intended to cool domestic demand growth and alleviate underlying price pressures.
According to the Bank of Russia's forecast, annual inflation is projected to reach 6.0–7.0 percent in 2026 before declining to the 4.0 percent target in 2027 and remaining anchored at that level thereafter.
High rates meet fiscal expansion
A 14.00 percent rate reflects the central bank's struggle against heavy fiscal stimulus.
Front-loaded purchases show inflation expectations remain unanchored despite tight credit.
Returning to 4.0 percent by 2027 will require prolonged restriction rather than quick fixes.
