Median securities holding trails kr. 745,389 average

Danish households held kr. 1,517 billion in securities at the end of September 2026, up kr. 130 billion since the year began, Danmarks Nationalbank reports. Among 2 million investors, the median holding was kr. 91,600.

Ordinary accounts hold two-thirds

Danish households' securities holdings reached kr. 1,517 billion at the end of September 2026, an increase of kr. 130 billion since the beginning of the year.

Ordinary securities accounts held 67 percent of the total, equivalent to roughly two-thirds.

Households also held securities in private pension accounts, share savings accounts and accounts linked to children's savings schemes.

Private pension schemes outside pension companies accounted for a large share of holdings.

Share savings accounts represented a smaller share of the total, while investments through children's savings schemes made up only a very limited share.

Large portfolios lift the average

The 2 million Danish investors held securities worth kr. 745,389 on average, compared with a median of kr. 91,600. Half held less than the median and half held more.

A relatively small number of very large portfolios raised the average.

The gap between average and median holdings was particularly pronounced in pension and ordinary securities accounts.

It was smaller in share savings and children's savings accounts, where contribution limits restrict portfolio size.

The average obscures the distribution

The average holding does not describe the middle investor's portfolio.

The much lower median shows how large holdings pull the average upward.

Account types also matter: contribution limits constrain holdings in share savings and children's savings accounts.
