Digital wallets account for a third of in-store card spending

Digital wallets handled DKK 51 billion of Danes' physical-store card payments in Q3 2026, according to Danmarks Nationalbank. Their share reached one third, compared with roughly one tenth in e-commerce.

Wallet use gains across channels

Danes made card payments totaling DKK 224 billion in Q3 2026, including DKK 155 billion in physical trade and DKK 68 billion in e-commerce.

Digital wallets accounted for DKK 51 billion in physical trade, equivalent to one third of card spending.

Online wallet payments totaled DKK 8 billion, approximately one tenth of e-commerce card spending.

Two years earlier, the respective shares were 27 percent and 5 percent.

Wallet use has therefore increased in both channels, with physical trade retaining the larger share.

The figures cover payments in Denmark and abroad and exclude cash withdrawals.

Physical trade and e-commerce totals differ from the overall total because of rounding.

The terminal defines the channel

The statistics count dedicated digital wallets such as Apple Pay and Google Pay, which let users add payment cards and pay using their phones.

They exclude MobilePay and cards stored in supermarket apps.

Physical trade includes staffed stores and unstaffed self-service locations, provided the payer uses a physical payment terminal.

E-commerce covers online purchases, mail and telephone orders and payments through apps, including supermarket apps.

Not every mobile payment therefore counts as a digital wallet payment.

Wallets are not all mobile payments

The one-third share measures wallet use within card spending, not across all retail payments.

MobilePay and supermarket-app payments sit outside the wallet definition.

The figures therefore distinguish dedicated wallets from the wider use of phones to pay.
