Interest rates held steady at 2.25 percent

The European Central Bank has kept its three key interest rates unchanged, with the deposit facility rate remaining at 2.25 percent. The Governing Council cited ongoing energy price volatility and persistent inflation risks at its July meeting.

Energy volatility stays the hand

The European Central Bank decided to keep the three key interest rates unchanged, maintaining the deposit facility rate at 2.25 percent, the main refinancing operations rate at 2.40 percent, and the marginal lending rate at 2.65 percent.

The Governing Council pointed to high uncertainty surrounding energy prices due to the conflict in the Middle East.

While volatile, energy prices currently stand close to June projections but remain well above pre-conflict levels.

Policymakers are closely monitoring indirect and second-round effects as the full inflationary impact of the energy shock plays out.

The Council reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring inflation stabilises at its two percent target in the medium term.

Data-dependent path and portfolio runoff

Reflecting an ongoing cautious stance, the Governing Council reiterated that it is not pre-committing to a particular rate path.

Instead, officials will follow a data-dependent and meeting-by-meeting approach, assessing incoming economic data, underlying inflation dynamics, and monetary policy transmission strength.

Meanwhile, the asset purchase programme and pandemic emergency purchase programme portfolios continue to decline at a measured and predictable pace as principal payments are no longer reinvested.

Tactical pause amid geopolitical tremors

The decision to hold rates reflects a tactical pause as external energy shocks cloud the disinflation path.

By refusing to pre-commit, policymakers preserve vital flexibility against mounting geopolitical risks.

Ultimately, this wait-and-see posture signals that reaching the final price stability target remains fraught with friction.
