African regulators assess fragmentation and technology risks
Senior financial officials met in Maseru, Lesotho, on October 23–24, 2026, for the Financial Stability Board (FSB) regional consultative group meeting. The Central Bank of Lesotho hosted discussions on regional vulnerabilities.
Fragmentation meets emerging technology
Lesetja Kganyago, Governor of the South African Reserve Bank, and Denny Kalyalya, Governor of the Bank of Zambia, co-chaired the meeting.
Participants included senior officials from central banks, financial authorities and regulatory bodies across Sub-Saharan Africa.
They discussed global and regional financial vulnerabilities, including how global policy uncertainty and economic fragmentation transmit to the region.
Regulatory and supervisory modernisation discussions considered the applicability of the FSB's proposed principles in Sub-Saharan Africa.
Members also examined climate-related data gaps, insurance protection gaps and the cybersecurity and financial stability implications of artificial intelligence and quantum computing.
Regional priorities feed global work
Members considered regional priorities for the FSB's 2027 work programme, coordination across Regional Consultative Groups and messages to the FSB Plenary.
These groups connect FSB members and non-members to promote financial stability, implement international financial policies and address regional vulnerabilities.
The announcement also links to the group's July 16, 2026, meeting in Mauritius, hosted by the Bank of Mauritius, and information on its membership.
Discussion rather than decisions
The announcement reports discussions, not adopted measures.
It places regional vulnerabilities alongside questions about applying proposed global principles.
It does not specify agreed messages to the FSB Plenary or changes to the 2027 work programme.
